HISTORY:
For countless centuries the world and its inhabitants had been controlled by the Greek Gods. Though the Gods did have power and dominance over the Earth and humans, their control between themselves was limited. Each God had there own particular and individual powers and weaknesses. Each one served a purpose, and had a job to do. If everyone did their respected jobs, then there would be no turmoil. However, if one God refused or ambitioned for a different position; then the chaos begins.
Contrary to popular belief, Hades is not the God of Death. Though he is King of the Underworld, he does not control death itself. As in his job description, Hades is the ruler of all who have died and come to the underworld. Ever since Hades gained power after the fall of Cronos, the God of Death itself was overshadowed. He was forced to continue his duties, without the credit. The humans of Earth worshiped Hades instead of him, and he began to fade from memory altogether. The heartless and now power hungry God was not going to sit back and watch as Hades ruled his rightful land of the Underworld. Thanatos was going to get his revenge. His solution was to overthrow Hades once and for all through war.
Defeating a God was no easy task and Thanatos knew this. Hades was extremely powerful and influential in the Underworld. The only way to defeat Hades would be to conquer him on Earth. No other God but Hermes could cross the river and Thanatos needed a stronger ally. In the end he decided to consult Ares, God of War for assistance. The result was a mass number of diverse creatures that Ares created to build up Thanatos’ army. Unfortunately for Thanatos, his secret army did not stay secret for long. Hades discovered his rebellious plan and instantly fled to Mt. Olympus to acquire his own army. After a lot of convincing, Hades gained the help of Artemis and her twin Apollo. Each created their own curse that changed humans into a dark creature. One creature was of the night, the other the day. Thus, vampires and were-creatures were born.
Only a little fighting had broken out before Zeus became aware of the dispute. Using his thunderbolts, he quickly ceased the battle. He demanded that Thanatos remain in his position as God of Death, or he would be greatly penalized. Fearing Zeus’ wrath, Thanatos reluctantly agreed and both he and Hades disbanded their armies. Though the rebellion between the Gods was over, a much bigger problem rose. A huge population of monsters and creatures had been unleashed into the human world. These beings had no control over their primal instincts, or in some cases, urge for blood and flesh. Most killings were made by young creatures, unknowing on how to manage these desires. In an attempt to keep the human slaughtering to a minimum, Caldwell Academy, School of the Underworld, was created. The school was founded as a place to keep young creatures away from mortals, and to teach the students how to handle their cravings.
PRESENT:
Though Caldwell Academy was the first of its kind, it was not the last. Soon after many other school were founded to reach the entire population of underworld creatures. Caldwell Academy itself changed with the times periodically through the centuries in an effort to keep the lifestyle inside the school as similar to the human world as possible. This was done so that its students would be accustomed to the human environment, and would help them blend in more sufficiently after graduation. Recently the types of students admitted have changed as well. All humans who know about the dark creatures (usually childeren of the parents who serve them) are allowed to attend.
The school building itself had to have some obvious alterations from a normal boarding school. Since more than a third of its students are allergic to the sun, the entire school was built completely underground except for a small, inconspicuous building holding the entrance. In addition, the forest surrounding the grounds is frequently filled with livestock to keep the feeding away from the humans. The school itself is located in a small, rural town in Canada. Students are allowed off the grounds, with the agreement that they will follow the short Code of the Underworld:
"No harm shall be done to others weaker than yourself. Your species is to be kept hidden from the humans at all costs. Any and all beings breaking these laws will answer to Hades himself..."
